Big Change from the IRS: Moving Away from Paper Checks
The IRS has announced a new regulation that affects how taxpayers make their payments. The IRS has announced plans to discontinue accepting paper checks for federal tax payments in the near future, as part of a broader move toward electronic payments. While paper checks are still currently accepted, this option is expected to be phased out. Exceptions will be available for those unable to access electronic payment systems.
We strongly encourage all our clients to begin transitioning to electronic payment methods, such as IRS Direct Pay, IRS2GO App, or the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). These methods are faster, more secure, and provide immediate confirmation.
What does this mean for you?
Convenience: You can pay directly from your bank account, debit card, or credit card securely online, without the hassle of writing and mailing a check.
Faster & Safer: Electronic payments post more quickly, reducing the risk of late fees or mail delays.
Confirmation: You’ll receive immediate confirmation that your payment has been received.
If you’ve been used to writing a check to the IRS every year, this may feel like an adjustment, but most taxpayers who have already switched say the electronic method is quicker, easier, and provides peace of mind.
As always, we’re here to guide you through this transition, help you set up your electronic payments, and answer any questions you may have.
